Jonathan Barnes concentrates his practice on general litigation, health care litigation, and complex litigation. His robust experience representing health care professionals and insurance providers in medical malpractice and medical negligence cases allows him to successfully defend clients in all matters.

Prior to entering private practice, Jonathan served as an Assistant State’s Attorney for the State’s Attorney Office of Montgomery County Maryland. He represented the State of Maryland in a wide variety of cases, ranging from misdemeanors to serious felony charges including fraud, forgery, burglary and robbery. During his time at the State’s Attorney Office, Jonathan tried over 200 bench trials, several jury trials and negotiated plea agreements in over 1000 cases.

While at the George Washington University Law School, Jonathan was selected as a Judicial Intern for the Honorable Lee F. Satterfield of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.  He also worked as a research assistant for Professor Lee Harris, a visiting professor from the University of Memphis Law School.  He served as an Executive Board Member of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) and Treasurer of the Entertainment and Sports Law Association.

Following his graduation from law school, Jonathan was a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Richard E. Jordan, Associate Judge in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, Maryland. There he assisted in all aspects of Circuit Court duties, as he drafted memorandum and opinions for civil, criminal and juvenile matters.

OUTSIDE THE OFFICE

Jonathan is a former Guest Lecturer at the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law and a former Panelist for the Women’s Lawyer Division of the Greater Washington Area Chapter of the National Bar Association. He recently appeared as a panelist at the George Washington University Law School for the Black Law Students Association’s Networking Panel.  As a Fellow for the Montgomery County Bar Association Leadership Academy, he developed and implemented community service projects at a local middle school.  He also served as a mock trial judge for “Just The Beginning,” a pipeline program that is aimed at inspiring young students and increasing diversity in the legal profession and judiciary.
